Support When Traditional Methods Are Not Enough

Low vision describes a significant visual impairment that cannot be corrected with traditional methods. Usually, vision loss related to refractive errors can be corrected with the use of eyeglasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. However, some types of low vision cannot be corrected with medical or surgical intervention.

Low vision includes:

  • A best-corrected visual acuity of 20/50 or less
  • Significant visual field loss such as tunnel vision or blind spots
  • Legal blindness, defined as less than 20/200 vision with the help of glasses or contact lenses

How Can Finch Avenue Optometry Help?

We will do our best to provide you with the support and guidance you need with low vision. The first step is visiting your optometrist for regular comprehensive eye exams to monitor your eyesight and determine the cause of vision loss.

From there, we can prescribe visual aids to improve your quality of life. Common visual aids that can be incorporated into daily life include magnifying glasses, tinted lenses, and video magnifiers.

How to Make Life Easier With Low Vision

Making a few changes to your daily habits can make life a bit easier. You may need to try a few different things to see what works best for you!

  1. Make sure your home has adequate lighting. You may need to try a few different lights and voltages to determine what works best for you.
  2. Use large print books for reading, or try out digital recordings or audiobooks!
  3. High contrast can make a big difference when writing. For example, many low vision patients find that a broad black pen or marker on white paper works best.
  4. Adding a high-contrast stripe on steps can help to prevent trips and falls.

We are happy to provide recommendations to help make your life easier! Please do not hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions.
