Living with Low Vision
Day-to-day activities can be especially difficult if your vision isn’t performing at its best. Low vision may impact your ability to see, but there are options available to help you navigate through your days with improved vision and techniques that can help you adjust to your changing vision needs.
Imagine struggling to decipher the words on a page, follow along in class, or navigate your kitchen safely. These are just a few examples of how low vision can significantly impact daily life.
Dr. Papadakis specializes in low vision treatment, as he achieved the status of Clinical Diplomate in Low Vision Rehabilitation from the American Academy of Optometry and is the only practicing Low Vision Diplomate in Canada, with fewer than 41 in the world.
Treating low vision all starts with a low vision assessment. Schedule yours today.
What Is Low Vision?
Low vision is a term used when a person has a very low score of vision (vision impairments) that requires special support from our team to help preserve their lifestyle. Low vision can make everyday activities like reading, writing, watching television, or even crossing the street feel like a challenge.
Our team understands that even with corrective lenses or surgery, some people experience persistent vision problems.
The good news is that Finch Avenue Optometry is here to help. Our team can assess your vision and explore your options to manage and support your vision, empowering you to maintain your independence.

Bioptic Driving for Low Vision
Driving offers convenience and independence, but regulations in Ontario for driving with vision impairment can limit access to this freedom. However, there may be a solution.
According to the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario, eligible individuals can apply for a special vision waiver for bioptic driving. If you qualify, the next step is getting fitted for a specialized telescopic lens and receiving tailored in-office and at-home training.
If you or your loved one cannot drive due to low vision, schedule an appointment to discuss the potential benefits of the bioptic program.
MacuMira Treatment for Dry AMD
Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that impacts your central vision. Changes to your vision caused by dry AMD can make it difficult to see the fine details needed to drive, read, write, and see faces. It can also impact your contrast sensitivity, making it more difficult to see in low light conditions.
MacuMira is an innovative treatment technology that helps improve vision in individuals with early to intermediate dry AMD. While there is no treatment that can completely cure dry AMD, MacuMira provides an effective management tool to improve and preserve your vision without any needles, medications, lasers, or surgery.
MacuMira uses a gentle microcurrent to stimulate the retina, delivered through your closed eyelids. The treatment is provided in 30-minute sessions, typically starting with 4 sessions over 10 days. Many patients notice vision improvement within the first 10 days of treatment. We’ll recommend a tailored maintenance schedule for follow-up treatments, usually once every 2.5–3 months.
If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with dry AMD, contact us to discuss whether MacuMira treatment is a good fit.
